By Andrew MacAskill March 3 (Bloomberg) -- International Personal Finance Plc, a U.K. lender that makes unsecured loans to low-income households overseas, said 2009 profit declined 35 percent as the recession boosted impairments. Net income dropped to 32.8 million pounds ($49 million) from 50.6 million pounds a year earlier, the Leeds, England- based company said in a statement today. Impairments on loans climbed 29 percent to 164.3 million pounds. "The outlook for the global economy has improved and conditions in our markets are generally better than at the start of 2009, but uncertainty remains," the company said in the statement. The bad weather in Europe at the start of the year had a negative effect on collections and impairments, IPF said. The company, which lends to about 2 million customers in Mexico and Eastern Europe, began trading on the London Stock Exchange in July 2007 after being split off from Provident Financial Plc, a U.K. lender to low-income households. The stock has gained 52 percent in the last six months. --Editor: Christiane Lenzner To contact the reporter on this story: Andrew MacAskill in London at amacaskill@bloomberg.net To contact the editor responsible for this story: Edward Evans at eevans3@bloomberg.net Related ArticlesFive Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry.
