West Hartford Called A City For The Next Decade - Hartford Courant

A muggy, miserable 95 degrees in May and all the beading sweat that imposes on the public ws not enough to deter the dozens who insisted Wednesday on eating al fresco in West Hartford Center. They lunched at the bistro-style tables along Farmington Avenue — the thirtysomething women in floral dresses, the older guys in polo shirts tucked tightly into khaki shorts. They sipped glasses of water with lemon.

What's hotter than the weather? West Hartford, No. 9 on a Top 10 "Best Cities for the Next Decade" list that Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine released this week.

The "once-sleepy suburb of Connecticut's capital" and "regional destination for shopping and dining," as the magazine depicts it, ranks among the company of: Austin, Texas (No. 1); Seattle; Washington, D.C.; Boulder, Colo.; Salt Lake City; Rochester, Minn.; Des Moines, Iowa; Burlington, Vt.; and Topeka, Kan. (No. 10).

What they all have in common is innovation, says Kiplinger's, the know-how to attract big- and small-business jobs, families and out-of-towners. In West Hartford's case, the magazine included the chic retail at Blue Back Square, niche businesses in Elmwood Center and Park Road, "top-notch" schools and town amenities such as an ice rink, five swimming pools and two public golf courses.

"Downtown Hartford is not really where people go anymore," Mayor Scott Slifka is quoted as telling Kiplinger's. "Great neighborhoods, a safe community and great schools have been our tradition."

Small-town charm — or has the town become a city? — also drew points for West Hartford. In the center, within walking distance of Whole Foods and Crate & Barrel, are large banners announcing the start of field hockey league registrations and automated town recycling. The area is not immune to the occasional bank robbery, but it's a place where convertible owners feel OK leaving the top down on the hottest day of the year.

Boulder named one of Kiplinger's 'best cities for the ... - Daily Camera

Posted: 27 May 2010 10:06 AM PDT

Boulder has been named one of the "10 best cities for the next decade" by Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine.

The July edition puts Boulder fourth on the list, behind Austin, Texas; Seattle; and Washington, D.C.

"Boulder is a wealthy, intellectual hot spot where environmental and scientific ideas blossom into business," according to the magazine. "Three economic drivers power Boulder: the University of Colorado, federal research laboratories and more than 6,600 small businesses and corporations, all woven into an entrepreneurial fabric. The city is also a mecca for those seeking healthy, active lifestyles."

The magazine selected the cities based on "out-of-the-box thinking."

"When governments, universities and business communities work together, the economic vitality is impressive," the editors wrote.

Burlington's innovative spirit praised with top-10 ranking - Burlington Free Press

Posted: 27 May 2010 07:43 AM PDT

Citing the city's creativity, entrepreneurship and innovative spirit, Kiplinger Personal Finance magazine has named Burlington one of the "10 Best Cities for the Next Decade" in its July issue.

Burlington landed No. 8 on the list, joining cities such as Austin, Texas (No. 1), Boulder, Colo. (No. 4) and Topeka, Kan. (No. 10).

The Kiplinger's profile of Burlington says "this mountain city wants to be a role model for saving the planet. Environmentalism isn't just ingrained in the city's diverse economy; it's the driver for much of its economic growth."

To identify the winners, Kiplinger's teamed up with Kevin Stolarick, research director at the Martin Prosperity Institute, a think tank that studies economic prosperity. Stolarick evaluated U.S. cities for growth and growth potential.

"New ideas generate new businesses," Stolarick said in a news release. "In the places where innovation works, it really works. People in fields such as science, engineering, architecture, and education are catalysts of vitality and livability in a city."

Burlington's "creative class" earned the city high marks. It, combined with data such as unemployment rate, income growth, affordability and population growth, are worked through a formula of Stolarick's making. An accompanying video on Kiplinger's website — w w w . k i p l i nger . c o m / guides/best-cities/ — mentions the University of Vermont, Seventh Generation and Dealer.com as examples of innovators, though the reporter also calls on more weathered standbys such as Phish, Ben & Jerry's and Church Street in lauding the city's innovative spirit.

MAGAZINE HONOR: The city of Des Moines has been named one of Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine's top cities
Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine has named Des Moines among its top 10 cities, saying there's more to it than agriculture.

The magazine, which focused on "out-of-the-box thinking," lists Des Moines as number seven.

In its July edition, Kiplinger says a likely worker shortage sparked by retiring baby boomers has "lit a fire" under city leaders. It says the city is working to bring back young workers, attracting global talent by developing its downtown and promoting jobs in the industries that are flourishing -- biotechnology, insurance, finance and publishing.

Austin, Texas, tops the list, followed by Seattle; Washington, D.C.; Boulder, Colo., and Salt Lake City.

Rochester, Minn., is sixth; then Des Moines; Burlington, Vt.; West Hartford, Conn.; and Topeka, Kan.
