Using computers to manage your personal finance Wednesday, May 5, 7 p.m. Buying a house? A car? Just trying to keep up with you budget and expenses? Whether deciding the best mortgage for you, to buy or lease that car, to take the zero percent finance or the rebate, or just staying on top of bills and payments, let your computer and the Internet make life a lot easier for you. Haim Levkowitz, Professor of Computer Science, at UMass Lowell, will show you some of the wonderful features computers have that can help you deal with every aspect of your finances.

 

Protecting your personal information online Wednesday, May 19, 7 p.m. Haim Levkowitz, Professor of Computer Science, at UMass Lowell will talk about phishing, safe versus unsafe online shopping, virtual credit cards, the right amount of personal data exposure on social networks, viruses and other type of "malware," and other threats in cyberspace. In all of these we will learn how to recognize attacks, and how to defend against them before — which is best — and while they happen.

 

Man's Best Friend series Dog Behavior 101, Tuesday, May 4, 7 p.m. Ray McSoley of Animal Behavior Associates will present tips on dog training. If you love Cesar Millan, you'll love Ray and so will your pet.

 

Responsible dog ownership Wednesday, May 12, 7 p.m. Virginia Rowland, President of Massachusetts Federation of Dog Clubs and Responsible Dog Owners, will talk about responsible dog owner ship and legislation impacting the welfare of dogs and dog owners. Whether you are thinking about getting a dog or already have one, come and learn from Virginia.

 

Health tips for your dog Tuesday, May 25, 7 p.m. Dr. Lawrence Bieler of Silver Lake Veterinary Hospital will answer questions about your canine. Remember to bring your questions but please leave Fido at home.

When you really think about it, you realize that we rate and/or score nearly all things in life so as to compare them with their contemporaries and confidently grant our patronage. Zagat gives restaurants ratings so that you can find the best tikka masala out of 20 Indian joints; eBay sellers have feedback ratings so you know which person will screw you the least when spending hundreds on sold-out Springsteen tickets; and in school, you get grades and take the SATs in order for some school to grant you admission so you can spend four years there doing keg stands and having lots of random sex. Your credit score's no different. The ins and outs of your financial activity are monitored and given a three-digit "score" so that all sorts of financial and other institutions have a way to determine your financial reliability and ability to get everything from a home loan to an iPhone.
