By MarketWatch Don't miss these top stories: The U.S. economy saw the biggest job gains in three years in March, the Labor Department reported Friday. Is that cause for celebration? Maybe. Certainly, it's not hard to find bad news within the report. For one thing, 162,000 new jobs is not even a drop in the bucket of the more than 8 million jobs lost since the recession began (and don't forget the number of new jobs that need to be created simply to keep up with new entrants into the labor force). Also, a chunk of the new jobs last month were temporary U.S. Census positions. While temp hiring among private employers often is considered a leading indicator of future permanent jobs, that's not the case for census work. And, ominously, long-term unemployment got even worse in March. A record 6.5 million people have been out of work for longer than six months. Plus, there's bad news regarding wages: Average hourly earnings fell by 2 cents, the first drop since 2006. But there are also some snippets of good news. The January and February jobs data were revised higher, revealing that, overall, private employers added to payrolls in both those months, rather than slashed jobs. Also, the work week has been getting longer, a sign to some economists that there's a growing demand for labor, as companies, seeing business start to pick up, ask workers to spend more time on the job before hiring new people to get that work done. We don't know what will happen next. But growth in jobs is a whole lot better than steep drop-offs. You don't need a degree in economics to know that. -- Andrea Coombes, Personal Finance editor REAL ESTATESave money on home energy costs with easy upgrades

| Saturday race to benefit leukemia society - Indianapolis Star Posted: 02 Apr 2010 10:21 AM PDT CARMEL -- Carmel resident Pete Dunn doesn't have to go far for Saturday's 5K Do More Be More Race. The race, which begins at 9 a.m., will be held in the Village of Race Clay in Carmel, where Dunn lives. It wasn't all about convenience for Dunn, a race organizer. "It really is a neat course," Dunn said. "I'm not running, but I'll be leading the pack on a bicycle." The proceeds from the run benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Online registration has closed. But runners can register at the site. The cost is $25 or $32 with a shirt. Dunn's company Green Candy and Angie's List are race sponsors. West Clay is at 131st Street and Towne Road. Dunn, a personal finance analyst, said he expects about 250 entries for the race, which is in its first year. "We'll have some people passionate about raising money for Leukemia," Dunn said. Among the runners will be some WISH-8 TV personalities. | Personal Finance Site For Women LearnVest Gets $4.5 ... - paidContent.org Posted: 01 Apr 2010 03:38 PM PDT LearnVest, a personal finance site for women, has raised $4.5 million in a first round of funding. LearnVest's pitch: Women control 80 percent of all consumer spending in the U.S.—so it makes sense to have a site that caters to them. Content includes a daily e-mail with "hip lifestyle tips for living on a budget," guides to a series of financial "basics," as well as financial action plans and budgeting tools. The NYT has a profile of the startup, which explains that LearnVest's 26-year-old founder decided there was a need for the site when she was offered a hedge fund job at Morgan Stanley—but didn't feel comfortable managing her own money. That's a good story but it will be worth watching whether LearnVest can catch on considering there are other personal finance resources online, including some that cater to beginners—both male and female. The funding round was led by Accel Partners. Here's the release, which has more details.
